Why choose filler dissolving or reversal?

Reversing dermal fillers is an option when there is a poor aesthetic outcome including lumps, puffiness, overfilling or visible filler creating a bluish tinge (Tyndall effect). You may also have to have filler reversed if it is causing unwanted side effects such as persistent swelling, irritation or compromising blood supply (known as a vascular occlusion)

What is filler dissolving?

Fortunately, the visible effects of hyaluronic acid based dermal filler can be reversed by injecting an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This enzyme breaks down the molecule, allowing it to be metabolised effectively by the body. Because hyaluronidase has been known to cause an allergic reaction in approximately 1:1,000 people, a patch test or weal test is essential to perform 20 minutes before treatment.

Once it is safe to proceed, the area is numbed and the enzyme is injected in a similar way to how filler is initially injected. The filler starts to breaks down quickly but it can take up to 2 weeks for final results. Dissolving is also used in filler emergencies, for example when it blocks a blood vessel. The aim in this case is to remove the filler quickly and restore blood supply to tissues.

Who is suitable for treatment?

This process is one which should be considered well. Always return to your initial practitioner should you require your dermal filler reversed. Dissolve and refill packages should not be the norm, as frequent exposure to hyaluronidase puts you at risk of a severe allergic reaction which could be life threatening

You may not be suitable for filler dissolving/reversal treatment if:

- You are pregnant or breastfeeding

- You have not consulted your initial practitioner

- You have an active infection

- Your filler is not hyaluronic acid e.g. silicon or Radiesse

- You have a bee sting allergy
