Why Do I Have Small Lips?
Small lips can be a natural feature or may develop over time due to a decrease in collagen and elastin as part of the ageing process. Genetics, lifestyle habits (like smoking), and sun exposure can also contribute to thinning lips. As the skin around the mouth becomes more delicate with age, lips can appear smaller, less defined, and lose their youthful fullness.
As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin - the essential proteins that keep the skin firm, plump, and elastic. The lips are no exception. There is also a loss of subcutaneous fat in addition to loss of hydration, both of which make the lips appear thinner with time. The orbicularis oris is the circular muscle that surrounds the mouth. Over time, this muscle can weaken and lose tone, which contributes to a less defined lip shape as well as vertical lip lines (commonly called smoker’s lines), even if you’ve never smoked.
